Having a complete landscape design that complements your property and serves your needs requires a lot of consideration. In fact, there’s a running list of different aspects and features you probably wouldn’t ever think of—and that’s where we come in!
We’ve been designing, building, and installing complete outdoor experiences for clients since the 80s. One aspect often overlooked in landscapes is the importance of walkways and paths.
They don’t just serve as a place for visitors to walk without ruining your grass, but they offer unique design elements that can help craft the atmosphere you want your property to possess.
More Than a Passage
If you view your walkways solely as a means for moving around your property, you’re missing out on a great opportunity to amplify your:
- Architecture
- Hardscapes
- Water features
- Well-maintained trees
Functional and aesthetic, walkways can draw the eye to an intended focal point in your landscape. Why are we so hyped about them? Here are a few reasons, starting with the obvious.
1. Transportation
Well-maintained pathways allow for easy movement throughout the property and can protect other elements of your landscape from foot traffic.
2. Accessibility
Going hand in hand with the ability to move around the space, a pathway can also connect all the elements you love the most in your landscape and ultimately decide how the spaces are used.
3. Complement Existing Elements
A well-constructed walkway can create mood. These elements can contribute to creating your complete outdoor space:
- Design
- Style
- Color
- Texture
Your Complete Landsculpture team member will help you decide if you need a more straightforward, efficient path or one that complements the natural contours of your landscape.
You’ve put time, money, and energy into crafting the perfect landscape so why not ensure that all elements are working in harmony?
For example, if you have an outdoor kitchen, you’ll need a pathway that not only gets you there but also fits in style and quality with the rest of your architectural elements.
Important Considerations
Apart from architectural elements like color and texture, some other factors will determine what type of walkway fits your landscape.
More formal landscapes, like certain commercial properties or estates, usually fit best with straight lines and right angles while naturally curving paths fit best with properties ascribing to a natural and rustic feel.
1. Path Width
When planning the pathways for your property, you must consider the amount of foot traffic you expect to get. Commercial properties that have clients moving in and out will require a much wider walkway than the path from your back door to your patio, for example.
2. Home (or Building) Construction
Does your home/building have any interesting architectural elements? Perhaps wood siding or brick? These factors will influence the type of material you use for your pathway to ensure its cohesive to the rest of the space.
3. Safety Concerns
Do you live in a region with heavy rainfall? Frequent snow or freezing? The materials, construction, size, etc. of your walkway will need to reflect the natural elements of your area.
